In a significant step towards addressing the pervasive issue of violence against women and girls, Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, in collaboration with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Southern Health and Social Care Trust, and South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, has launched the NoExcuse campaign. This initiative aims to raise awareness, challenge harmful attitudes, and provide support to victims.
A Call to Action
The campaign, timed to coincide with the UN Women’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, will utilize digital and public relations strategies to highlight the alarming statistics and the devastating impact of violence on women and girls. By shedding light on the various forms of violence, including physical, sexual, emotional, and financial abuse, the campaign seeks to foster a societal shift towards zero tolerance.
Community Engagement and Support
To further strengthen community awareness and support, information sessions will be held on Tuesday, November 26th at Down Leisure Centre and Wednesday, November 27th at South Lakes Leisure Centre, from 10 AM to 2 PM. These sessions are open to the public and will provide a safe space for women and girls to learn about available services and support networks. Representatives from the Councils’ Safeguarding Teams, both Health and Social Care Trusts, Women’s Aid, and other relevant organizations will be present to offer guidance and assistance.
A Shared Responsibility
Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, Councillor Sarah Duffy, emphasized the urgent need to address sexual violence against women and girls, stating, “Sexual violence against women and girls is endemic across our community. It can be inflicted by anyone, anywhere, and at any time. The trauma it inflicts is foundational and becomes the root cause to so many social harms. We must remove those stigmas of society’s victim-blaming culture and ensure anyone experiencing any form of sexual abuse is supported. There is a role for everyone in our communities to say enough is enough, gender-based violence is not normal, is not okay, and there is ‘No Excuse’.”
A Brighter Future
By uniting efforts and raising public consciousness, the #NoExcuse campaign aims to create a safer and more equitable society for all. It is a collective responsibility to challenge harmful norms, support survivors, and work towards a future free from violence.
