On August 17, the police arrested a school attendant accused of abusing the girls, aged three and four, in the school’s toilet. This shocking event has ignited a firestorm of anger, culminating in a massive protest at Badlapur railway station.
Parents and Locals Block Badlapur Railway Station
The Badlapur railway station became the epicenter of the protests as hundreds of irate parents and local citizens gathered to demand justice for the victims. The protestors, driven by anger and frustration, blocked the railway tracks, halting the movement of trains on both Up and Down routes from 8 a.m. The aim was clear: to draw the administration’s attention to their demands for swift and stringent action against the accused.

Shinde emphasized that the school attendant would be booked under charges of attempt to rape, and that the case would be fast-tracked. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also addressed the situation, announcing that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the incident. The SIT, headed by Inspector General Aarti Singh, will conduct a thorough investigation to uncover the truth and hold those responsible accountable. Fadnavis reassured the public that the government is committed to taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of school children across the state.
Formation of Vishakha Committees in Schools
In light of the incident, Maharashtra’s School Education Minister, Deepak Kesarkar, announced the formation of Vishakha committees in schools. These committees, named after the Supreme Court’s landmark Vishakha judgement, are designed to address complaints of workplace sexual harassment. The formation of these committees in schools is aimed at providing a platform for raising grievances, particularly for girl students in the 9th, 10th, and junior college levels.
Kesarkar also highlighted the importance of functional CCTV cameras in schools, a requirement already mandated by the government. Unfortunately, the school where the abuse occurred had non-functional cameras, a lapse that the minister vowed would not go unaddressed. A circular will be issued to ensure that schools are held accountable for such lapses, with strict action to be taken against those who fail to comply.
